She is currently writing a new book, based on her personal life experience, titled How Do I Tell the Kids . . . About the DIVORCE? How Would You Define Success?
For me, success is the fulfillment of my sense of self. Achieving that which I feel is the highest expression of what I believe I am makes me successful. That can be translated into successfully writing a book, handling a difficult relationship, or being a loving parent. It can mean reaching a goal I’ve set to complete a project, learn a new software program, or get a standing ovation after I deliver a speech. What’s most important is that only I can define success for me. If it gives me satisfaction and leads to positive results that in no way harms others, then I am a success. And the drive to be successful continues to create challenge and fulfillment in my life.

Hello Rosalind. What was it like for you when you first started out? Is it possible to be a professional speaker and have a job on the side?
August 9th, 2006 at 11:17 am
In response to Tig Wallis:
Believe it or not, most speakers start their career with another job on the side as they test the waters. It’s a career in which you can easily do this. If you’re planning to speak professionally on a topic related to your current job, it’s a natural extension and you know the target market to approach for speaking gigs.
If you’re speaking on a subject in a totally new direction, you need to research your new market and learn who hires speakers and which topics are most in demand.
Most speakers start by speaking for free, just to get the experience and referrals. Move ahead and speak as often as possible, for as many audiences as possible (civic groups, churches, business clubs, other associations, etc.). If you love it, give it all you’ve got and you’ll be rewarded with more calls to speak.

Hi Rosalind,
Thank you so much for your insight. I’ve been a public speaker for entertainment industry events and software organizations. I absolutely loved it and for some reason headed towards a sales job to “make money”. Now, I’m heading towards the industry that holds my heart. I was one of those “oddball kids” who “loved ORAL REPORTS.” So, thanks again for speaking up about this industry!
