Today is THAT Day, Dream Jobber

Written by Michael on November 16, 2007 – 12:36 am -

Remember how you’ve told yourself that someday you’d look into becoming a fishing boat captain, or a children’s book writer, or a magician, or a comics artist?  (Or, substitute your own dream job here: ___________.)

Here’s news for you.

Dream Jobs Headquarters (DJHQ) has just asked me to announce that, hmmm, well . . .

Today is that day.

Today is that some day.

So, right now, shut off this damn computer and go talk to someone doing what you’d love to be doing, and ask them to help you.

Go get a book about that career.  THEN contact at least one person mentioned in that book, or that author herself.

Go sign up for a course at your local community college that relates to that dream job.

What you can’t do?  Spend the rest of today surfing websites!

Get out there among the living — among the folks doing what you would love to be doing.

DJHQ guarantees that you’ll open some windows that, if you follow the paths put in front of you, will lead to dream-job success.

Make it so.  And, write back and tell me what’s cookin’.

Well, Michael, two of your postings hit home - “Today is That Day, Dream Jobber” and “Blogging for Yourself and Your Dream Job”. I have spent many, many, many hours procrastinating (i.e. surfing the net). So a few days ago I started my blog - it’s not much, yet, but it’s a start!! I pledge to do something each day that is related to my goal. Thanks for the inspiration! I love your blog.

  2. Michael Says:

Thanks for your comments, Cheryl; and I appreciate your kind words.

Sooooooooo . . . what’s your goal and where do we find your blog?

    Michael

You’ll find my blog at http://lakemarymusings.blogspot.com/ . It’s really just my “practice” blog - I haven’t told one single soul that I’ve done this - not my husband or my kids or any of my friends. My postings are very short and I’m having a little bit of trouble deciding how to post what I’m really thinking while still keeping everything relevant. Honestly, my thoughts are so random at the moment. Maybe I should do more than one blog - ha!!

I have several of the books you recommend and I am reading everything I can on your blog.

So I’d appreciate any constructive criticism you’d like to toss my way. I can take it!

    Cheryl K.

Great start Cheryl. It takes a while to find your “voice,” but eventually you will and you can focus on that area.

Where would you like to see this thing go?

    Dream a little with us.

  5. Cheryl K Says:

I think I AM finding my voice, Michael, in that I’m more organized in posting to my blog. I’m still trying to decide what direction to go in creating an internet business.

  6. Michael Says:

    Internet business?

    Some thoughts and ideas:

    1. Please do NOT fall for one of the get-rich-quick schemes. They’re tempting and all over the place.

    2. No one makes any money from those things except the people selling the schemes.

    3. Rather, pick a topic you care passionately about, and blog about it till the cows come home.

    4. You’ll pick up followers.

    5. Add Google Adsense to your site to generate revenue.

    6. Keep writing about what you’re passionate about.

    Holler if questions.

    Michael

Thanks for the advice. I can tell you that (in my case) earning money from an internet business is secondary to creating something useful and interesting. I’ve also decided that a percentage of whatever I do earn will go to a good cause of some sort but don’t know which cause at this point.

Right now I need to figure out where to go for cost effective yet high quality website design. Also have to nail down the focus and find a name for the website. Do you know anything about SiteSell/SiteBuildIt?

  8. Michael Says:

I’ve not used SiteSell/BuildIt but know that many people have been happy with them.

An alternative approach, that would be MUCH faster and give you more ultimate control might be to move your blog to your own domain name (once you have that).

Step 1. Come up with a domain name.

Step 2. Register it; I like GoDaddy but there are many other places.

Step 3. When you’re ready, use WordPress to create your own blog with that domain name and host it yourself at a place like Site5.

Step 3 requires a little study, but this is one way to have your own website up and running quickly and very professionally.

By the way, this blog is done in WordPress (which is free) and hosted at Site5, where I pay, I think, something like $25 a quarter.

I’m going to do exactly what you suggest! By the way, are you “for hire” as a consultant?

  10. Michael Says:

I do this stuff for fun, not money. (I make my money over at my ‘day job’ at http://www.InfoSourceLearning.com.)

I will help you “publicly,” meaning here at the site so others can learn as we go along as well.

So, next step, I think, is coming up with a domain name. Probably don’t want to announce that publicly, BUT . . . what type of business or product are you thinking about?

Or, what topics would you want to write your blog about?

    Michael

  11. Cheryl K Says:

Today I will concentrate on a choosing a domain name. Am pretty sure it’s not going to be an easy task so I think I’ll give myself until Monday, the 24th. That will be my absolute deadline. I think.

Are you familiar with Aaron Goldman at Good URL, Bad URL? http://www.goodurlbadurl.com/? He has a list of do’s and don’ts that seem sensible. What do you think? I’m not even sure how I found him - could have been through your blog. What do you think of his list?

I have a couple of concepts in mind for a website; both of them focusing on a safe, healthy and/or green lifestyle. I don’t feel comfortable being more specific (in public) than that right now. So that’ll be the substance of the blog, I guess.

  12. Michael Says:

Cheryl: Please check your personal gmail email — I’ve sent you a couple of ideas and suggestions that you probably don’t want public.

Aaron’s list is a good one indeed!

  13. Cheryl K Says:

O.K., I’m gonna need to revise my “choosing a domain name” deadline…it’s tougher than I thought!! But I can do this…
