Keep It Simple, Make It Good

You know, when all is said and done, you look around you and you realize that most success stories are built around a simple idea or theme.  What makes them successful, usually, is that the person or people behind the success story were just so damn good at executing their “simple” plan.

I think we trip ourselves up sometimes by over-complicating things; we make a process out of something that should be an over-and-done thing, or we undertake elaborate research when all we really need to do is take Step 1, follow that with Step 2, and then another small kaizen-like move.

So, it’s always thrilling to me when I learn about someone who’s bucking the trends by just doing something simple and well.  A few days ago I was catching up with Guy Kawasaki and his blog at How to Change the World, when I came across such a story about Don Vandervort, who recently won Google’s AdSense Story Contest.

Don’s site, Hometips, offers all sorts of freebie ideas on home improvement, DIY projects, and remodeling.  According to Don, his AdSense revenues went from paying for coffee on to buying lunches.  And, then on to covering all of his company’s overhead.

I just relish in these kinds of stories because I think they apply right on to what you’re trying to do with your dream job quest.

Keep it simple.

Make it good.

You see, Don’s site is simple in that it’s focused on content for the homeowner.  There’s nothing fancy about what he’s trying to do.  He’s not trying to create a MySpace for Homeowners.  And, Don did all the AdSense additions to the site himself, without lots of research.

He just went out and did it.

Find what you’re good at, do it, make it better . . . repeat.

Don Vandervort’s doing it, making it better, and repeating.

And you?

Write and let me know how your dream job quest is evolving.
