The Riskiest Thing You Can Ever Do Is Play-It-Safe
Written by Michael on February 1, 2008 – 1:40 am -Are you a risk taker?
If you’re not, you probably should be working for someone who is.
You see, there’s this myth out there (and I’m not really sure who the they are who promulgate this damn thing) that says you should follow a fixed course in life, that your surroundings, friends, parents, or partner have laid out for you. And, that there’s a safe way to live — the job with the perfect benefits, the home in the “right” neighborhood, the ideal partner, yaddy yaddy yadda.
If you’re ever to grab that dream job, you’ll have to go beyond your comfort zone.
Period.
Go check out Seth Godin’s recent video – I’ve written about Seth a number of times in the past, and I just love this guy’s brain to pieces. Hey, I’m not a Godin Groupie, and I don’t agree with some of what he advocates, but I will tell you this — they guy gets your brain a jumpin’. He’s been good for my spirit and my wallet, as many of his ideas have shaped how I run my businesses.
If you haven’t been introduced to Seth before, this video, on the nature of curiosity, is a good way to get started. And, it may just get you thinking about whether or not you have the curious-gene coursing through your veins . . . for, if you do, you’ll likely reach the Dream Job Mountain peak.
Go check Seth out, and happy climbing.

Hi Michael,
Times have changed. For the previous generation, safety (and stagnation) was the result of going to school, getting a good degree and then spending your entire working life with the same employer who offered good pay with benefits.
That employment model barely exists today and I don’t want to have to rely on “the company” for my security. As you imply in the article, that employment model is inherently more dangerous than relying on ourselves. At least we are in charge and know that we have our own best interests in mind.
