Interview Yourself to Uncover Your Dream Job
Written by Michael on August 12, 2008 – 6:05 am -Having trouble uncovering your dream job passion?
My buddy, Stephen Hopson, over at Adversity University did something clever recently.
Stephen regularly runs interviews with interesting people who he knows or would like to know. Last week, though, he didn’t have an interview subject, so he decided to interview himself. And, in typical Hopson style, he added a little flair. Normally in his interviews, he asks a question of his subject, then he’ll add his own final comment to the subject’s answer.
And, here’s the twist: When he interviewed himself, he answered his questions; but then, he also commented on his own answers.
So, it was Hopson interviewing Hopson and Hopson responding to Hopson’s questions and comments. Sounds a little confusing, but it really isn’t when you look at it.
In fact, the more I thought about it, the more I realized this would be an incredible technique to help you uncover just what it is you want in life.
In fact, your first question to yourself should be: Self, just what is it you want your dream job to do for you? Then, answer that question. After that, reflect and respond to the “you” who just answered it.
Then let your questions take whatever direction feels right to you, as the interviewer.
I’m intrigued with what you might uncover about yourself.
Check out Hopson’s interview with himself, and then do your own.
Good stuff; check ‘er out.

Michael:
While you commented to me before about the usefulness of doing a self-interview, I had a sudden realization this morning.
You brought up something very powerful that I hadn’t thought of before.
Not only is doing self interview a great way to uncover what you truly are about or what you want to do but what you’re really doing is interviewing your inner spirit!
Isn’t that cool or what? You are actually “going within” and allowing the spirit to come forth to answer your own questions. Whoa. I never thought of that before!

Looks like great advice for following your dreams. I am currently pursuing my dream of becoming an airline pilot and I recently entered this contest where you can win your dream job for a day I think anyone reading this article should enter it.

What a great idea! I work as a recruiter for a Boston based staffing agency, Hollister Staffing (www.hollisterstaff.com) and am always looking for new ideas to give my clients to help improve their interviewing skills. This is such a great idea, and I am going to start recommending it to my clients.
Thank you!
