Do You “Get to Do” Your Dream Job?
Written by Michael on March 25, 2008 – 12:55 am -Seth Godin grabbed me again, and maybe he will you too. In a recent post, Seth talks about the pleasure of writing blog posts . . . where they’re not a pain, but rather a privilege.
Here’s what Master Godin Says:
Someone asked me the other day if posting a blog post every day is intimidating or a grind.
I view it as something I get to do. I spend most of my blogging time deciding what not to post.
The best work, at least for me, is the stuff you get to do. If you are really good at that, you’re lucky enough to have very little of the have to stuff left.
Do you, Dream Job Seeker, see your work this way? If you do, you’re doin’ good. If you don’t, tell me why not and let’s see what we can do about it.

Dream Job Seeker’s Evening Meditation
Written by Michael on March 21, 2008 – 1:05 am -And if tonight my soul
may find her peace in sleep,
and sink in good oblivion,
and in the morning wake
like a new-opened flower
then I have been dipped again in God,
and new-created.
– D. H. Lawrence, Shadows
I found the above in the amazing little book, 17 Lies That Are Holding You Back & the Truth That Will Set You Free, by Steve Chandler.

Why I Love Failure to Pieces
Written by Michael on March 17, 2008 – 12:51 am -I’ve written about why failure is so good for the soul, painful as it is when you live through it. Here’s one piece about part of one of my own business failures: Werner’s Failed Business #2.
I was reminded of all this when reading Eldon Sarte’s excellent article on Maybe You Just Haven’t Failed Enough.
You see, Eldon thinks a lot like I do on this subject. Failure is actually good for you, but only if you’re able to pick yourself up and give things another go. Unfortunately, for many of us, we sink all of our hopes and dreams into one plan and, when it fails, we feel so destroyed that we just can’t move forward again. Read more »

Taking Risks . . . Part 347
Written by Michael on March 5, 2008 – 3:35 am -Nearly everything I write about here has something, more or less, to do with risk taking. Whether it’s starting up your own business, getting into — or out of — a personal or business relationship, taking the necessary steps to evolve a bit closer to your dream job . . . everything seems to involve some risk.
And, even the seemingly riskless options, such as staying in a job even though it’s filled with god-awful drudgery, are filled with more risk than most people realize. (Being in charge of yourself is, actually, often the least risky of all endeavors.)
So, it was a real pleasure to come across my friend Stephen Hopson’s excellent post on risk taking over at Adversity University.
Stephan’s a class act, a risk-taker, and great public speaker.
Check ‘er out; good stuff.

Cut Email Addiction — Devote Extra Time to Dream Jobbin’
Written by Michael on February 28, 2008 – 2:49 am -One of the biggest reasons I hear from people who can’t seem to hook onto their dream jobs is that they’re just too busy . . . no time, too many distractions, yaddy yaddy. Okay, well, the whole motivation thing, or lack thereof, is a road we could go down and discuss, but that’s not where I’m taking you here today.
So, for now, let’s assume the I-don’t-have-time excuse is a valid one.
Let’s see if we can free up some of it for you.
Does the following sound like you?
I have a secret: I am an email-holic, and I am addicted to email. Read more »

Going to the Office Today?
Written by Michael on February 27, 2008 – 12:38 pm -Think about this next time you go to a job you can’t stand:
Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like. Will Rogers

Are You a Doer or a Dreamer?
Written by Michael on February 23, 2008 – 1:57 am -I have a friend, let’s call this person Eduardo, who’s a pro’s pro in the Internet marketing arena. He makes a ton-o-dough with his Internet properties and services and he works hard at what he does. (He did everything the old-fashioned way by boot-strapping his business and his learning.)
We get together from time to time to swap stories and compare notes.
Quite often our conversation will drift to mutual friends or acquaintances who have good intentions, and often the smarts, in creating businesses, careers, or online entities for themselves, but just never seem able to get the job done. Read more »

Anything Can Be
Written by Michael on February 9, 2008 – 11:02 am -Listen to the mustn’ts, child.
Listen to the don’ts.
Listen to the shouldn’ts, the impossibles, the won’ts.
Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me . . .
Anything can happen, child.
Anything can be.

The Riskiest Thing You Can Ever Do Is Play-It-Safe
Written by Michael on February 1, 2008 – 1:40 am -Are you a risk taker?
If you’re not, you probably should be working for someone who is.
You see, there’s this myth out there (and I’m not really sure who the they are who promulgate this damn thing) that says you should follow a fixed course in life, that your surroundings, friends, parents, or partner have laid out for you. And, that there’s a safe way to live — the job with the perfect benefits, the home in the “right” neighborhood, the ideal partner, yaddy yaddy yadda. Read more »

You Really Can Do Anything You Want, You Know?
Written by Michael on January 9, 2008 – 1:25 am -Understand that the right to choose your own path is a sacred privilege. Use it. Dwell in possibility. Oprah Winfrey
I just finished reading the Christmas-present-to-myself, Ken Follett’s masterpiece about 14th-century England, World Without End (hardcover edition).
I spent most of my time just enjoying the book and learning about that period in history; but, after reflecting a few days on it, I realize now that I missed an overriding principle of the whole thing as it relates to those of us trying to find our way and dream jobs in the 21st century.
