Keep It Simple, Make It Good
Written by Michael on December 12, 2007 – 12:21 am -You know, when all is said and done, you look around you and you realize that most success stories are built around a simple idea or theme. What makes them successful, usually, is that the person or people behind the success story were just so damn good at executing their “simple” plan.
I think we trip ourselves up sometimes by over-complicating things; we make a process out of something that should be an over-and-done thing, or we undertake elaborate research when all we really need to do is take Step 1, follow that with Step 2, and then another small kaizen-like move. Blogging for Yourself — And Your Dream Job
Written by Michael on November 19, 2007 – 1:53 am -I love Seth Godin’s brain.
He is just so right on most of the time, with simple — yet so incredibly profound — thoughts.
I’ve written about Seth before; several times actually.

The Only Thing Limiting You Is . . .
Written by Michael on October 5, 2007 – 8:07 am -Well . . .
Hmmm . . .
That would be . . .
Ahem . . .
Yes, that would be . . .
You.
One of my all-time favorite motivational stories is about Roger Bannister, the young British medical student who, back in the early 1950s, became the first human to run a mile in under four minutes.
Sports writers and analysts had been saying, for decades, that no one would ever run a mile under four minutes.
Couldn’t be done, they said.
Scientists of the day were writing journal articles about how the human body was incapable of that level of energy and speed.
Impossible, they said.
We’ve proved it’s beyond human means, the leading thinkers of the age declared.
Well, of course, now we know it wasn’t impossible, because Sir Roger (he wasn’t a sir, then, of course) did it.
Amazing, huh?
Well, yes it is . . . but you want to know the most amazing thing about the whole affair?
You see, in the year following Bannister’s milestone trot around that fabled old track in Oxford, England . . . seventeen other runners recorded times under four minutes as well. From spots all across the globe.
Gee! Wowie, zowie.
Couldn’t be done.
Impossible.
Science says “no way.”
Okay, Dream Jobber, what was that excuse again? You know, the one that’s keeping you from the life of your dreams?

Today’s Dream Job Action Item
Written by Michael on September 26, 2007 – 2:02 am -Step 1. Right now (don’t think too much about this) . . . write down three jobs you’d love to be doing. Okay, you’ve already taken too long — just off the top, which three?
Step 2. Write each job on a piece of paper, fold, and put into a hat.
Step 3. Draw one out. (I really like hats — they’re more fun, but the actual drawing procedure is up to you.)
Step 4. TODAY (do not put this off, Dream Job Seeker) . . . go to your nearest gigantamundo bookstore and buy one book that relates to that job.
Step 5. Post back and tell me what book you got and why.

Burn Your Bridges, Dream Jobber
Written by Michael on July 17, 2007 – 2:36 am -Today’s Motivator is this scary little tidbit, Dream Job Seeker:
Chances are that you’re holding yourself back with all sorts of escape plans. You really want to be a writer, perhaps, but you’re holding onto your day job at the bank.
Or, you want to run charter fishing trips off the southwest coast of Florida, but you’re holding onto the teaching job until it gets going.
Well, lemme tell ya something right here and now — there’s someone out there right now who needs to read those words that you’re going to write, and there’s a whole bunch of people that only you can help out fishing, cause you know the best places of all.
There’s a huge source of energy that moves when you move.
Jump off the bridge.
Or, burn it.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah . . .
Written by Michael on July 11, 2007 – 3:52 am -Today’s Dream Job Motivator:
I know you’re thinking you don’t have the training or the skills or the contacts to get that dream job.
Am I right?
So . . . do this:
Go work for free for someone in the field you’d love to get involved with. Just a couple of hours a week.
It was Mark Twain (a real Top 5er and my second favorite author of all time) who said this:Â Even Noah got no salary for the first six months partly on account of the weather and partly because he was learning navigation.
Sometimes you just have to jump in on your own dime.
Cause I’m tellin’ ya this, Dream Jobber. If you’re not willing to do that, by throwing a few freebie hours at your quest, all the excuses in the world don’t amount to a hillabeans.
Am I right?

So, here you go go . . .
