Some of the Best Free Job Resources Around

Written by Michael on June 28, 2007 – 12:00 am -

There are loads of online job boards and resources.

Infoplease is one that I’ve recently re-discovered, and it’s probably worth a look-see.  This baby is jammed with job descriptions, forecasts, and tools to help you explore different career ideas.

These kinds of resources tend to be pretty dry, and Infoplease’s career section is really no exception — I mean, just how sexy can you make a job description?

However, the Infoplease write-ups can help you narrow down your interests to a few areas, so you can then go off and focus on those with other resources and your own foot work.  As you browse hundreds of different jobs at Infoplease , you’ll get a chance to uncover what you think might be good fits for your own background and style.

I suggest you start with the Career Guide section, where you can match your interests to:

  • Jobs Involving Math
  • Jobs Involving Reading and Writing
  • Jobs Involving Science
  • Jobs Involving Social Studies
  • Jobs Involving Music and the Arts
  • Jobs Involving Building and Fixing Things
  • Jobs Involving Helping People
  • Jobs Involving Computers
  • Jobs Involving Law
  • Jobs Involving Managing Money
  • Jobs Involving Sports
  • Jobs Involving Nature

Then, once inside one of those categories, you’ll see lists of jobs.  For example, within the Jobs Involving Reading and Writing section, you’ll find these jobs:

  • Writer
  • Desktop Publisher
  • Secretary
  • Librarian
  • Reporter

For each of those jobs, and for the hundreds of others buried within the various job categories, you’ll find sections on what the job is like and what you need to do to get ready for a career.  For some of the jobs, you may also learn about specific individuals in that career.

Another section of this site is the Infoplease Career Channel, which is a job posting board along with additional information and forecasts about specific careers.  So, while you can use the Career Channel just as you would, say, a Monster.com, for job searching, the Infoplease site provides more detail on job trends than you’re likely to find elsewhere.

Worth a look Dream Jobber, so check ‘er out.

Get the Inside Scoop on Companies You Want to Work For

Written by Michael on November 29, 2006 – 1:46 am -

Here’s one I really like!  A sure Top 5er.

At Jobster.com, in addition to the typical find-a-job search engine (see Monster.com or CareerBuilder for more on that) stuff, you can also take a peek inside most of the major companies throughout the world to see what it’s like from an employee’s point of view.

You can post questions to employees and see how they respond.  You likely won’t uncover many responses from employees at smaller companies, but if climb-the-ladder careers at places such as Google, Microsoft, and the likes are your cup of java, you’ll enjoy Jobster.

Check it out; fun site for a select few Dream Job Seekers.

The Mother of All Job Search Engines?

Written by Michael on August 22, 2006 – 4:45 am -

I’ve just come across an interesting company and site that may make it much easier for you to search for job positions online.

I haven’t personally used it (I already have a few jobs!), but it comes highly recommended by Guy Kawasaki, the original Apple Macintosh evangelist, Silicon Valley veteran, writer (get some of his stuff — he’s a Top 5er in my view), and just all-round smart guy.

[Two of my favorite Kawasaki books are Selling the Dream, about embracing your passion for your business, your work, or your career and then making it real, and Hindsights:  The Wisdom and Breakthroughs of Remarkable People.]

Rather than going one-by-one to such sites as CareerBuilder, Monster, or Hot Jobs in search of your dream job, why not try a site that covers them all, plus a whole lot more?

Simply Hired is a vertical search-engine company that claims to be building the largest online database of jobs on the planet.  Well, it certainly looks like they’re on the case, as they find job listings — dream jobs and run-of-the-mill alike — from thousands of job boards, classified newspaper section, and company job postings.

I trust Guy, and the folks at Simply Hired look like they’ve figured out how to make a good thing better.

Check ‘em out and please report back if you like what you see.

Get Ye To a Job Posting Site Today!

Written by Michael on July 2, 2006 – 2:53 am -

I was talking to a friend the other day, and he mentioned that he was still having trouble finding a better job.  We chatted a bit, and then I asked how he was doing with the online resume and job hunting websites.

He looked at me oddly for a moment and then said:  “Ya know, I’ve never put my resume into an online database.”

Hmmm, I wanted to reach across the table and shake my old buddy — he was missing a major tool in every dream jobber’s backpack.

Monster, Hotjobs, and Careerbuilder are the Big 3 of online recruiting — you can post your resume online in minutes.

For free.

Most of the employers and recruiters that use the Big 3 are looking for those mostly in traditional careers, but I’ve seen just about every job we cover in the Dream Jobs To Go series as well.

When I have my employer hat on at InfoSource, Inc., we’ve found Monster the better of three — they’ve delivered more targeted results — but that’s from an employer’s perspective.  And, because there’s no charge to the job seeker, you ought to be in all three.

Star Chefs Job Search Sites

Written by Michael on June 26, 2006 – 2:06 pm -

This is one of the best sites I’ve seen on listings for the restaurant industry.  I especially like their career center where they provide loads of real-world tips and everything from resume writing to building a portfolio (yup, that can apply to cooks too).  Click Star Chefs Job Finder for more details.
