My Dream Job Contest
Written by Michael on July 7, 2008 – 1:42 am -In the Fall of 2007, the AARP started a contest for retired dream-job seekers. They invited job seekers 50 and older to share their vision of the perfect job, where they asked contestants to submit brief essays about their dream jobs and to describe how journaling about their pursuit would help others.
The AARP judges read more than 7,000 essays to come up with six winners. Each winner received a career coaching or business start-up package from RetirementJobs.com.
Check out the contest and follow the journals of the six.

Success Magazine Is Cool!
Written by Michael on June 27, 2008 – 1:24 am -As you probably know, I read and talk about personal and professional development resources quite a bit. They are, in fact, a big part of my own life and chiefly responsible for my outlook and approach I use to all things business and personal.
Many people who’re around me see me as a can-do, positive spirit, but it comes just partly naturally. I work at at staying “up” and I credit what I read and listen to for a big part of that.
Perhaps it’s not true for everyone, but I find I have to work at happy, can-do, and positive. And, every day too. But, maybe that’s just me.
Anyway . . . as part of my own ongoing personal development, I picked up a copy of the newly revised Success Magazine recently. I remember subscribing to it years ago, but gave up after a couple of years because it was just a little too rah-rah for me. Frankly, hadn’t seen it in years.
And, yeah, there’s still the rah-rah aspects in its latest incarnation (hey, whaddaya expect, eh . . . a bunch of downer stuff?), but I find it to be practical and very hands-onish.
Best of all, each issue comes with a combo CD/DVD with hours of audio and video presentations — they’re worth far more than the price of admission, just by themselves. I’ve been listening to the CDs recently on my morning walks.
Good stuff; check ‘er out.

How May I Help You Find Your Dream Job?
Written by Michael on May 16, 2008 – 1:08 am -How may I help you find your dream job?
Are there resources you’d like to learn more about?
Specific jobs or areas we can highlight or focus on?
I want to help you however I can.
No charge, no sweat.
Here’s what one reader wrote to me a few days ago:
Hi Michael.
I cannot express how excited I am to have found your site. I came across it following a link from Self Made Chick.I believe I am an entrepreneur. I have a dream of making money doing things I love that help people, and in my own fashion. But I have so many things I am interested in.
I am a teacher, and a writer and I have a natural instinct for marketing and business. I want to try so many things.
Like you, I have always been fascinated by jobs. What it takes to do it.
What type of person it is good for. I’ve often contemplated becoming a career counselor or coach. As I was reading your bio, I couldn’t believe how many similarities we have. I am just so excited to have met someone who is passionate about many things, fascinated by careers and researching them, and understands the need to find a person’s purpose.
I have done a workshop with Martha Beck on this topic. I am currently reading “Are You Using Your Genius?” at the recommendation of Jonathan Fields. And now, I will have to add 17 Lies to list. My head is swimming with ideas. It’s both exciting and scary because I know I am on to something big in my life. It’s the universe talking to me!
The readings are empowering. I often feel selfish when I think about leaving the classroom to pursue other interests. I feel guilty because I see people just working and struggling to make ends meet. I ask myself, who am I to think I can achieve these things. But I think I have finally accepted that I am lucky because I have the courage to at least try.
Thank you so much for your blog. I am extremely happy I found it.
I’ve connected with this reader.
How might I be of service to you?

Startup Funding for a New Business
Written by Michael on February 8, 2008 – 12:10 am -Scott Allen, who keeps track of all things entrepreneurial, has a recent article about where to find dough for a new business.
I’m pretty much in the camp that says any sort of external funding is a bad thing.
Evil, actually.
For one, you get sloppy. Real sloppy. I remember an old pal of mine telling me about his start up and all the new goodies (office furniture, new computers, yaddy yaddy) he was acquiring. When I asked him where all that stuff was coming from and how it was being funded (he’d had a loan from a family member to start up his venture), he said something like . . . ahh, not to worry, the company’s paying for it.
